Advent Calendar Filler Ideas: Small Gifts That Fit Each Door

Fill an Advent calendar with small things that fit the openings and suit the person: stickers, notes, charms, mini puzzles or tea for adults, and paper or large items for toddlers. Measure first. Wooden drawers are often about 1.3 inches wide inside, and anything for a child under 3 must be too big to choke on.

Start by measuring the openings

Most filler disappointments come from buying before measuring. Two common formats hold very different things.

Filler ideas by recipient

Toddlers and babies (under 3)

The rule here is simple: nothing small. The CPSC bans toys and children’s articles for under-3s that contain small parts, meaning anything that fits entirely into its small parts test cylinder, which approximates the throat of a child under three. Small balls are regulated separately: a ball that passes through a 1.75 inch hole counts as a small ball under federal labeling rules.

That rules out most drawer-sized trinkets. What works instead:

• Folded paper: a picture to color, a photo of a family member, a note to read aloud
• Sticker sheets (paper items are excluded from the small parts ban, but supervise use)
• A card that points to a larger gift nearby: “Look under the sofa cushion”
• Board books or bath toys too large for any drawer, placed beside the calendar

Kids 3 to 8

A wider world opens up, but check age labels on every item. Ideas that fit most drawers and pockets:

• Mini erasers, sticker strips, temporary tattoos
• Small figures or building bricks from a set that grows each day
• Joke of the day, riddle cards or a treasure hunt clue
• Hair clips, a friendship bracelet, a tiny notebook
• Craft supplies: a pipe cleaner bundle, a few beads for older kids

Teens

Teens tend to like things they will actually use:

• Lip balm, hair ties, face mask sheets (pockets rather than drawers)
• Phone charms, keychains, pins, enamel patches
• Gift card codes printed on folded slips
• Coupons: pick the movie, skip one chore, a late curfew on a weekend

Adults

Adult fillers can be more personal and less toy-like:

• Tea bags, instant coffee sticks, a hot chocolate packet folded small
• Jewelry, charms or cufflinks
• Seed packets, bookmarks, a pressed flower in a folded card
• Mini puzzles, dice or brain teasers (see our puzzle and game Advent calendars)
• Handwritten memories: “the day we met,” “our first apartment”

Non-candy filler ideas that cost little or nothing

You do not need 24 purchases. Free and near-free fillers often end up being the favorites.

1. Activity slips. Bake cookies, watch a holiday movie, drive past the lights, make a card for a neighbor.
2. Notes. Compliments, family jokes, a fact about the person’s name or birth year.
3. Scavenger clues that lead to a bigger gift or a snack in the kitchen.
4. Photos printed small and folded.
5. Multipacks split up. One sheet of stickers, one bag of hair ties or one box of tea covers several days.

A good mix for a tight budget: roughly a third free slips, a third split multipacks and a handful of small bought gifts saved for weekends and the last day.

What not to put in an Advent calendar

A few items look drawer-sized and harmless but are on the CPSC’s warning lists:

• Loose button or coin batteries. The CPSC says a swallowed button battery can burn through a child’s throat or esophagus in as little as two hours. Avoid light-up trinkets whose battery door opens without a screwdriver.
• High-powered magnets. When two or more are swallowed, the CPSC explains, they attract each other inside the body, and many incidents have required surgery. It describes them as a risk to children from toddlers through teens.
• Latex balloons for young children, which fall under the same federal labeling rules as small balls and marbles.
• Anything melting-prone in a calendar near a radiator or sunny window, such as chocolate or lip balm.

How to fill it so the month feels balanced

• Put the smallest items early in the month and save something a little bigger for December 24 or 25.
• Mix categories so no two days in a row feel the same.
• Label each item with its number on the back if more than one person fills the calendar.
• Fill all openings on November 30 so nothing is forgotten on a busy morning.
