Choose an advent calendar in this order: who will open it, how many doors you need, and when it must start. Then check the age label on toy calendars, the allergen statement on food calendars and what is actually behind each door. Most calendars have 24 doors and start December 1, so buy by mid-November.
Start with who will open it
The recipient decides almost everything else. A calendar is a daily ritual, so it should hold things the person will enjoy opening 24 times.

Wikipedia’s advent calendar entry notes that most calendars cover each December day up to Christmas Eve, and some add Christmas Day. A few calendars follow the church season instead, which starts on Advent Sunday. In 2026 that is November 29.

How to judge value per door
Divide the price by the number of doors. That gives a rough cost per day, but it is only a start.
Next, read the contents list. Toy calendars often mix main items with smaller extras. Mattel’s Hot Wheels 2026 calendar, for example, has 24 doors: 10 hold a die-cast car and 14 hold holiday accessories. That is a fair design, but it helps to know before a child expects 24 cars.
Beauty calendars add another layer: the advertised “value.” ICanGWP, which tracks beauty calendars, explains that this figure is based on the retail prices of the products inside. Check the age label on toy calendars
Toy calendars are full of small pieces by design, so the age label matters more than usual.
The CPSC bans products with small parts that are intended for children under 3. Toys for children aged 3 to 6 that contain small parts must carry a warning that they are not for children under 3. You will see this on most toy calendars. Mattel’s Hot Wheels 2026 calendar, for example, carries a small parts choking warning and is rated 3+.

Food calendars: allergens, dates and heat
Food calendars need three extra checks.
Allergens. U.S. packaged food labels must declare the nine major allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame. Sesame joined the list on January 1, 2023. If the calendar is imported or resold, look for an English allergen statement before buying.
Best-by dates. The date should run well past December. Bonne Maman, for example, says to enjoy its 2026 calendar before June 2027 for the best flavor.
Heat in shipping. Chocolate can melt in a warm truck or a sunny porch. In a warm climate, choose faster shipping or have it delivered when someone is home.
Beauty calendars need care too. The FDA says no U.S. law requires expiration dates on cosmetics, and heat breaks down preservatives. Store any beauty calendar somewhere cool until December.
Refillable or single-use?
A single-use calendar is ready to go and holds a surprise the buyer did not have to plan. A refillable wooden or fabric calendar costs more once, then becomes part of the decorations every year. You choose what goes in, which also solves allergy and age concerns.

Buying an advent calendar on eBay
Resellers are useful once a calendar sells out at retail, and for sealed calendars from past years. A few checks help:
- Match the year on the box to the listing. Many calendars look similar from year to year.
- Look for intact seals and clear photos of every side.
- For food, ask for the best-by date if it is not shown.
- Read the seller’s feedback and returns policy.
