Are beauty advent calendars worth the money?

Almost every beauty calendar comes with a headline value. That figure is the combined full retail price of the products inside, as calculated by the brand or retailer.

The value tells you something, but not everything. A calendar is only a bargain if you would have bought those products anyway, in those sizes, and in those shades.

Ask three questions before you buy:

• How many items are full size? A calendar of mostly foil sachets will feel thinner than one with a few full-size lipsticks, even at a similar value.
• Are the shades flexible? Sheer lip colors and highlighters work on more people than a single foundation shade.
• Does it match your routine? A skincare calendar full of actives may not suit sensitive skin.

12, 24 or 25 days: what is the difference?

Length is the first split. Longer calendars give a daily ritual; shorter ones concentrate the budget on fewer, larger items.

Fragrance calendars

Fragrance calendars usually hold small spray or dab vials, which makes them a way to sample before buying a full bottle. For 2026, ICanGWP lists Jo Malone London’s Christmas Kist (25 items), a Bloomingdale’s 12 Days of Luxury Fragrance calendar and Maison Margiela’s 7-day Replica set.

If you are waiting for a restock, set a reminder for these dates in 2027 too. Beauty calendars tend to launch in September.

How to check products before you gift them

Look for dates. The FDA says no U.S. law requires cosmetics to carry an expiration date. Check each product for a printed date or an open-jar symbol, and use eye products promptly. Manufacturers usually recommend replacing mascara two to four months after purchase.

Keep it cool. The FDA warns that heat can break down preservatives. Do not store a calendar in a hot car or beside a radiator until December.

Think about sensitivities. Fragrance and strong actives are common in calendars. For someone with sensitive skin, a calendar focused on body care or tools may be safer than one built on serums.

Buying a sold-out beauty calendar secondhand

Once a calendar sells out at retail, resellers are the main route. Buy only sealed calendars, and check that the year on the box matches the listing. Avoid opened calendars with “a few doors missing.” You cannot tell how the remaining products were stored.
