Candle Advent Calendars: Mini Candle Sets and Numbered Candles

Candle advent calendars come in two main kinds. Boxed sets hold one small scented candle per day: Yankee Candle has sold a 24-day set of its Minis, and Voluspa sells a 12-day box of petite candles. The German numbered candle is a single pillar you burn down one mark each evening. Both differ from an Advent wreath.

Two kinds of candle advent calendar

A candle advent calendar either gives you a new candle each day or one candle that marks the days as it burns. The table compares the main formats.

Candle calendars are not the four candles of an Advent wreath, which are lit one per Sunday. For colors, lighting order and wreath shopping, see our guide to Advent wreaths and candles.

Yankee Candle and Voluspa mini candle sets

Mini candle sets are the most common candle calendar, and the brands sell them as gift sets.

Yankee Candle Countdown Calendar Candle Set. Yankee Candle lists 24 of its Minis, two each in 12 scents, among them Balsam & Cedar, Christmas Cookie and Sparkling Cinnamon. It is not a new 2026 set, so check that a listing is still in stock and sealed before you plan around it.

Voluspa 12 Day Candle Advent Calendar. Voluspa fills its box with 12 petite pedestal candles from its Japonica and Holiday collections, plus a gold-plated wick trimmer. Voluspa says each candle sits in a 2.5 oz. glass vessel, burns for about 25 hours and is handcrafted in the United States from a coconut wax blend. Each numbered drawer opens with a pull ribbon, and the wick trimmer is the hidden extra. The brand sells other advent gift sets too, so check which box a listing shows.

Twelve-day sets fit a shorter countdown, from December 13 or 14. Our guide on when to start an advent calendar covers 12-day timing.

Luxury fragrance calendars with candles inside

Some high-end fragrance calendars mix candles with perfume and body care. Diptyque’s 2025 calendar, 25 Scented Treasures, sold at Bluemercury, mixed candles with fragrance and body care. These are fragrance gifts first, so our fragrance advent calendar guide is the better place to compare them, and the beauty advent calendar guide sets them beside skincare and makeup calendars.

Check the year on any listing. A past-year luxury box may hold scents the brand no longer sells.

The numbered countdown candle from Germany

A numbered advent candle is one tall pillar printed with the days 1 to 24, top to bottom. Each evening you light it and let it burn down to the next number, so the candle itself becomes the calendar. Deutsches Haus, a shop that sells them, describes Advent candles as a long-standing German tradition.

Manufactum, the German retailer, sells an XMAS Countdown pillar candle in this style: a red candle about 30 cm (12 inches) tall with the numbers printed as white dots, made to burn from December 1 to Christmas Eve. Look for one that is marked clearly and sits in a deep, sturdy holder, since it will burn in short sessions for weeks.

How to burn advent candles safely

Candle safety matters more in December than any other month. NFPA says December is the peak month for home candle fires, and that over half of candle fires start when something that can burn sits too close.

• Keep candles at least 1 foot (30 centimeters) from curtains, greenery, paper and anything else that can burn, NFPA advises.
• Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each burn, the National Candle Association says, to prevent high flames and soot.
• Space candles at least 3 inches apart if you burn several minis together.
• Stop at 1/2 inch of wax, and do not burn a candle all the way down, the National Candle Association adds.
• Do not move a candle until the wax has cooled completely.
• Blow out every candle when you leave the room or go to bed, and keep lit candles out of reach of children and pets.

Prefer no flame at all? Many families use LED candles; the wreath guide covers flameless sets and their coin-battery risk. For a candle calendar for someone who loves their home more than gadgets, our advent calendars for adults list more home fragrance ideas.
