Pick a food advent calendar by what the person already reaches for each day. Tea drinkers get a new blend every morning, and coffee drinkers need a calendar that fits their brewer. Chocolate or hot chocolate fans get a sweet after dinner. Then check caffeine and allergens, and plan for warm-weather shipping.

Tea: a new blend each morning

Tea calendars are the easiest to share. DAVIDsTEA’s 24 Days of Tea holds two servings of loose tea behind each door, 48 in all. Tea Forte’s Warming Joy Herbal calendar is mostly caffeine-free, which suits evening tea, and Adagio sells its 24-day calendar as loose tea or teabags, and also in decaf. The format matters as much as the flavors: loose leaf needs an infuser, while tea bags and pyramids go straight into the mug. Compare them all in our tea advent calendar guide.

Coffee: match the brewer first

A coffee calendar has to fit the machine on the counter, so ask before you buy. The Roasters Pack sends whole beans for someone with a grinder. Door County Coffee packs 24 bags, each sized for a full pot. Nespresso sells its Swarovski calendar in separate Vertuo and Original versions, since the capsules are not interchangeable. Cometeer’s frozen coffee needs only hot water. The full breakdown, including Keurig pods and decaf doors, is in our coffee advent calendar guide.

How much caffeine does a daily cup add?

The FDA cites 400 milligrams a day as an amount not generally linked with negative effects for most healthy adults. It gives 71 milligrams for a 12-ounce black tea and 113 to 247 milligrams for the same cup of brewed coffee. A calendar cup adds to what they already drink, so a light sleeper may do better with herbal tea or decaf doors. The FDA says people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or sensitive to caffeine, should ask their doctor.

Chocolate and hot chocolate: a sweet after dinner

Chocolate calendars split into two kinds. Brand-name calendars such as Lindt Teddy, with 24 foil-wrapped milk chocolate pieces, are a good fit for kids and anyone with a favorite bar; our chocolate advent calendar guide covers Lindt, Ferrero and Kinder. Chocolatier calendars change their theme each year. Vosges calls its 2026 box The Grand Cacao Lodge, with 25 days behind drawers, and Compartes fills its Enchanted Castle with 24 chocolates in 12 flavors. Those are in our gourmet chocolate advent calendar guide.

For a hot chocolate fan, look for a calendar with a drinking chocolate or cocoa behind each door and check whether it is made with milk or water. Not a chocolate fan at all? Try candy advent calendars or the jam and cheese picks in our food advent calendar guide.

How to read the allergen label

Food calendars pack many flavors into one box, so allergens are easy to miss. U.S. labels must name any of the nine major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame. The FDA says they appear in parentheses after an ingredient, such as “flour (wheat),” or in a “Contains” statement. Sesame joined the list on January 1, 2023.

Many chocolatiers add a facility note too. The Compartes Enchanted Castle page lists milk, eggs, wheat, soy and tree nuts as ingredients and says its facility also handles peanuts and sesame. For a severe allergy, that line matters as much as the ingredients.

Tip

Buying for a household with allergies? A tea or coffee calendar is usually simpler than chocolate. Still read the label: flavored teas and coffees may contain nuts or milk.

Heat, shipping and the best-by date

Chocolate calendars are often ordered while it is still warm. Compartes says it ships Monday to Wednesday in warm weather to avoid weekend transit, packs with ice when needed, and may hold orders when the destination is over 75°F for 2-day shipping or 80°F for next day. Once the box arrives, keep it somewhere cool, away from radiators and sunny windows.

The FDA says a “Best if Used By” date marks when a food is at its best flavor and quality, and suggests checking food past that date for changes in color, consistency or texture. On eBay, buy new, sealed calendars from the current season, and ask the seller for a label photo if the allergens are not shown.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a tea or a coffee advent calendar?

Buy the one that matches what they already drink each morning. A coffee calendar also has to match how they brew, whether that is a grinder, a drip pot, a Nespresso or a Keurig. Tea calendars are more forgiving, and several include caffeine-free blends for the evening.

Is there an advent calendar for someone who avoids caffeine?

Yes. Tea Forte's Warming Joy Herbal calendar holds 24 herbal blends, most of them naturally caffeine-free, and Adagio sells a decaf version of its 24-day tea calendar. Chocolate, candy and savory calendars avoid the question entirely.

Can chocolate advent calendars melt in shipping?

They can, especially in warm states. Compartes, for example, ships early in the week in warm weather, packs with ice when needed and may hold orders when it is hot at the destination. Bring deliveries inside quickly and store the calendar somewhere cool.

Is it safe to eat an advent calendar after the best-by date?

The FDA says a Best if Used By date shows when a food is at its best flavor and quality. For a gift, buy a calendar made for the current season so it is at its best through Christmas.
