A Christmas countdown calendar shows how many days are left until December 25, and it can start on any date. An advent calendar is one kind of countdown with fixed doors, usually December 1 to 24 or 25, each hiding a treat or picture. Countdown blocks, chalkboards and flip charts change a number instead, so they suit early starters.
How a Christmas countdown calendar differs from an advent calendar
An advent calendar has a set number of doors tied to dates. It counts the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas, and the familiar version, with 24 little doors starting on December 1, became the standard after 1945. Behind each door is a picture, a message or a small gift.
A Christmas countdown calendar counts the other way: it shows the days remaining. Nothing has to be opened, and the start date is up to you.
| Feature | Advent calendar | Christmas countdown calendar |
|---|---|---|
| Start date | December 1, or Advent Sunday | Any day you choose |
| Length | 24 or 25 doors (12 on short versions) | As many days as you count |
| How it marks a day | Open a door, drawer or pocket | Change a number, remove a link, flip a page |
| Surprise inside | Usually a treat, toy or picture | Usually none |
| Year to year | Printed calendars are single use; wooden and fabric ones refill | Blocks and chalkboards work every year |
Advent dates compared with countdown start dates
Advent dates are fixed by the church calendar. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops describes Advent as the season covering the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, beginning on the Sunday closest to November 30. In 2026 Advent Sunday falls on November 29, which gives 26 days to Christmas Eve. Most store-bought advent calendars still start on December 1, so one design fits every year.
Countdown calendars have no fixed start. You can begin the day after Thanksgiving, the day the tree goes up, or at a round number such as 100 days if your countdown can show three digits. Our guide to when to start an advent calendar covers the December 1 and Advent Sunday choice in more detail.

Types of Christmas countdown calendars
Christmas countdown calendars come in a few common formats. None needs filling, which makes them a low-effort choice for a busy household.
Number blocks. Two wooden cubes show any number from 00 to 31. DIY guides from Adventure in a Box and Hearth and Vine explain the trick: one cube carries 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, the other 0, 1, 2, 6, 7 and 8, and the 6 turns upside down to make a 9. Ready-made sets often add a “days until Christmas” sign beside the blocks.
Chalkboard signs. A small board reading “days until Christmas” lets you write any number. The same board can count down to a vacation or the last day of school once the holidays are over.
Flip calendars. A small stand-up flip calendar shows one number per page, and you turn a page each morning. Many are magnetic, so they can sit on the fridge.
Paper chains. A paper chain is the simplest countdown to make with kids. The craft site Buggy and Buddy describes counting the days left until Christmas, making one link for each, and removing a link each day. Writing or drawing something on each strip, such as an activity or a kind deed, turns the chain into a mini advent calendar.
Tip
12-day calendars and the Twelve Days of Christmas
Twelve-day calendars sit between the two types. They have numbered doors like an advent calendar but only 12 of them, so they suit adults, smaller budgets or late starters. Start on December 13 to open the last door on Christmas Eve. Hallmark’s 12-ornament countdown boxes are built for exactly those last 12 days.
The name can confuse. The Twelve Days of Christmas run from December 25 to January 5, after Christmas rather than before it. Some families use a 12-door calendar for those days instead, opening one door each day after Christmas.
Which Christmas countdown calendar to choose

Frequently asked questions
Is a Christmas countdown calendar the same as an advent calendar?
Not quite. An advent calendar has a fixed set of doors, usually for December 1 to 24 or 25. A Christmas countdown calendar shows how many days are left and can start on any date, often with blocks, a chalkboard or a flip chart.
When should a Christmas countdown calendar start?
Whenever you like. A chalkboard can run from 100 days out, and a two-block set can start from 31 days, around Thanksgiving. Calendars with numbered doors usually start on December 1, or December 13 for a 12-day calendar.
What is a 12-day Christmas countdown calendar?
A calendar with 12 doors instead of 24. Start it on December 13 to finish on Christmas Eve. The Twelve Days of Christmas proper run from December 25 to January 5, so some families open one door a day after Christmas instead.
Can you reuse a Christmas countdown calendar?
Yes. Number blocks, chalkboards and flip calendars carry no year, so they work every December, and many can count down to birthdays or trips the rest of the year.
