Carved light wooden nativity set with Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus under a large star

A nativity advent calendar tells the Christmas story one day at a time. Behind each door is a figure, a Bible verse or an ornament, and by Christmas the scene of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the wise men and the baby Jesus is complete. Common formats are wooden drawers, magnetic scenes, scripture-card pockets and Jesse Trees.

How a nativity advent calendar tells the story

Nativity advent calendars follow the birth narratives in two Gospels. Wikipedia’s summary notes that Luke describes the angel’s visit to Mary, the census, the birth in a manger and the angels appearing to shepherds. Matthew describes the angel appearing to Joseph and the wise men from the East.

Most calendars blend the two into the familiar crèche scene. Makers order the pieces differently, so read the product description if the sequence matters to your family.

In Western churches, Advent begins on the Sunday nearest November 30, according to Britannica, which places it four Sundays before Christmas. In 2026 that is Sunday, November 29, though most calendars still start on December 1. Our guide to when to start an advent calendar covers both dates.

Wooden nativity advent calendars with figures

Wooden and figure nativity calendars are the most common type and are made to come out again each year.

Calendar Format What the seller lists
Nativity Wooden Advent Calendar with Treat Drawers (The Catholic Company) Cutout nativity scene above 24 drawers Red and green drawers for your own treats; 11.25 x 12.75 x 2 inches; manufactured wood
Kurt Adler Magnetic Musical Nativity Advent Calendar Resin stable scene A base plus 24 magnetic pieces placed day by day; stable set against a starry night sky
Precious Moments Countdown to Christmas Nativity Advent Calendar Wooden drawer calendar 25 hand-painted resin figures and a storybook

Drawer calendars you fill. The Catholic Company’s calendar has no figures inside. Its drawers hold whatever you add, such as candy or stickers, while the nativity scene sits on top.

Figure calendars. The Kurt Adler and Precious Moments sets add one figure per day, so the scene grows across December. Precious Moments has made more than one nativity calendar. BestReviews notes buyer reports of damage, repeated drawer numbers and missing pieces on its O Come Let Us Adore Him calendar, so count the pieces of any figure set when it arrives.

Scripture card and fabric Christian advent calendars

Fabric Christian advent calendars swap figures for daily readings. The Catholic Company’s 18-inch fabric calendar hangs from a wooden dowel, shows the nativity at the top and has a pocket for each day below. Scripture cards come in a drawstring bag: you read one card a day and put it in its pocket, and the seller says the cards cover the whole nativity story by Christmas Day. The pockets also fit small treats.

Cards on this kind of calendar may print the full verse or only the Bible reference to look up, so check the listing photos if you want the words on the card. Fabric calendars are light and fold flat for storage. Our reusable advent calendar guide compares fabric and wooden styles in more detail.

Jesse Tree advent calendars and ornaments

A Jesse Tree is an older Christian way to count the days of Advent. Christianity.com describes adding one ornament a day, each paired with a Bible reading, from Creation through to the birth of Jesus.

The name comes from Isaiah 11:1, which speaks of a rod from the stem of Jesse, the father of King David. Wikipedia’s article on the Tree of Jesse traces the image in Christian art back to an 11th-century illuminated manuscript. Families today hang the ornaments on a small tree, a branch or a felt banner.

Chocolate calendars with the Christmas story

Some Christian advent calendars keep the chocolate and add the story. The Real Advent Calendar from the Meaningful Chocolate Company is sold in the UK. Its 2026 edition has 25 windows, each with a line from the Christmas story, Fairtrade chocolates and a free 24-page Christmas story activity book. It is a UK product, so check shipping and the best-by date before ordering one to the U.S.

Safety checks for nativity calendars and young children

Nativity calendars are often bought for families with small children, so read the age label and any choking warning. The CPSC bans small parts in children’s products intended for children under 3.

Safety

Magnetic figures need extra care. The CPSC warns that when two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed, they can attract each other inside the body and cause serious injury, and it advises keeping small magnets away from young children.

Frequently asked questions

What is a nativity advent calendar?

A nativity advent calendar builds the Christmas scene one piece at a time. Each day reveals a figure, a verse or an ornament, and the scene is complete by Christmas. The order of the pieces varies by maker, so check the description if it matters to you.

What is a Christian advent calendar?

A Christian advent calendar ties each day of the countdown to the religious meaning of Christmas, usually with a Bible verse, a short reading or a nativity figure behind each door. Some also hold a small treat.

What is a Jesse Tree?

A Jesse Tree is a small tree or branch decorated with one ornament a day during Advent. Each ornament stands for a person or event in the Bible leading up to the birth of Jesus. The name comes from Isaiah 11:1, which speaks of a shoot from the stem of Jesse, the father of King David.

Are nativity advent calendars safe for toddlers?

Check the age label first. The CPSC bans small parts in products made for children under 3, and it warns that swallowed high-powered magnets can cause serious injury. Keep small figures and loose magnets out of reach of young children.
