A book advent calendar puts a book behind each day of the countdown. Ready-made sets are mostly for young children: Little Golden Books and Usborne each sell boxes of 24 small storybooks, and Coco Wyo makes one with 24 mini coloring books. For teens and adults, the better option is usually a calendar you wrap yourself.
Ready-made book advent calendars for kids
Children’s publishers make most of the book advent calendars you can buy. Each one holds 24 slim books in a box or folder, so the whole set doubles as a small library once December ends.

Little Golden Books Advent Calendar
The Little Golden Books calendar holds 24 miniature paperbacks, each with the gold foil spine of the full-size books. Penguin Random House says every 24-page book keeps the complete story and art of the original, 576 pages in all. Titles include The Animals’ Christmas Eve, Richard Scarry’s Christmas Mice and The Night Before Christmas. The publisher gives an on-sale date of September 22, 2026, and says the sleeve and folder are built for years of use.
Usborne Advent Calendar Book Collection 2
Usborne’s second collection has a storybook behind each window and is listed for ages 3 and up. The 24 books mix fairy tales, fables and festive stories, from Puss in Boots and The Snow Queen to The Dinosaur who met Santa Claus. A retelling of Jingle Bells has a QR code for singing along, and A Christmas Carol is rewritten for young children. Collection 2 first came out in 2023, and Usborne sells the first collection under a similar name, so check the edition before buying.
Coco Wyo Cozy Countdown
Coco Wyo’s calendar swaps stories for 24 mini coloring books, with pictures adapted from Coco Wyo’s full-size books. The publisher calls it a gift for coloring fans of all ages. A UK listing describes 12 pages per book and a special book for Christmas Eve, and gives a September 2026 publication date.

Book advent calendars for adults and teens
Adult book advent calendars are harder to find ready-made. One option is a story collection laid out as one tale per day. 24 Christmas Tales: Advent Calendar Storybook, from Alicia Editions, gathers stories by Charles Dickens, Hans Christian Andersen, the Brothers Grimm, Louisa May Alcott and O. Henry. Its last story, for December 24, is Dickens’s A Christmas Carol.
The other option is a homemade calendar of wrapped books, which lets you pick genres the reader already likes.
How to make a DIY book advent calendar
A homemade book advent calendar works like a library’s “blind date with a book” display. The Ames Public Library wraps those books in brown paper so the title and cover are hidden, with a label giving the genre and the book’s first line. The same idea works at home:
- Set the pace first. Decide how many books the person will really read in December. Twelve books, or one per weekend, is more realistic than 24 for most adults.
- Fill the other days. Bookmarks, a reading light, tea or a handwritten recommendation keep the daily ritual going between books. Our advent calendar filler ideas list small gifts by size.
- Wrap and number each book. Plain brown paper and a numbered tag look tidy, and a box or basket holds the parcels better than a drawer calendar.
- Write one clue per tag. Use the genre, the setting or the first line, so opening the parcel still feels like a surprise.
- Save the best for last. Put a new release or a favorite author on December 24.
Most wooden drawer calendars are too small for paperbacks. Our reusable advent calendar guide covers formats with bigger pockets.
Tip
Picking the right book advent calendar
The right book advent calendar depends on who opens it and how much they read.
- Toddlers and preschoolers: Little Golden Books or Usborne. The books are short enough to finish at bedtime.
- Kids who would rather draw: Coco Wyo’s coloring calendar, or a puzzle calendar instead. Our puzzle and game advent calendar guide covers jigsaw, mystery and dice options.
- Adults: a daily story collection, or a DIY set of wrapped books chosen by genre.
Sealed sets from earlier years still turn up after stores sell out, but check the year and edition in the listing title. For other ideas by age, see advent calendars for kids and advent calendars for adults, or browse every type in the best advent calendars of 2026.

Frequently asked questions
What is a book advent calendar?
A book advent calendar is a countdown with a book behind each door or in each parcel. Ready-made sets usually hold 24 small paperbacks, one for each day from December 1 to Christmas Eve. You can also make one by wrapping and numbering books yourself.
What is in the Little Golden Books advent calendar?
Penguin Random House lists 24 miniature paperback Little Golden Books with the gold foil spine. Each 24-page book has the complete story and art of the original, and titles include The Animals' Christmas Eve and The Night Before Christmas.
Are there book advent calendars for adults?
Ready-made ones are rare. The usual options are a story collection arranged as one tale per day, such as 24 Christmas Tales, or a homemade calendar of wrapped books with a clue on each tag.
How many books should a homemade book advent calendar have?
As many as the reader will finish. Twenty-four full books in 24 days is a lot for most adults, so many people wrap one book per weekend, or 12 books for the last 12 days, and fill the other days with bookmarks or notes.
